History of the P.I.'s Types of Private Investigators P.I's in the news

Where Do P.I.’s Belong in Divorce?

Cheating and Private Investigators

Private investigators are often one of the professionals hired when a spouse is considering, or in the process of, obtaining a divorce. The internet and yellow pages show that there are many private investigators ready to offer their surveillance and research skills to suspecting spouses. Numbers of spouses become suspicious that they are being cheated on when their spouse changes their behavior or attitude. When the hunch becomes overwhelming, the hiring of a P.I. will become the next logical step. By using various monitoring techniques and high-tech gadgets, P.I.’s are able to contribute their investigational services to the steady divorce market.

If a husband or wife suspects that their spouse is cheating or engaging in extramarital affairs, they may find themselves hiring a P.I. to obtain evidence against their suspected partner. A private investigator will have to find ways to access the many places where a spouse may be committing adultery in order to collect this evidence. The adulterous party may find a lover through a number of ways including work, internet chat room or dating services, their neighborhood, or even through church. Technology has given the P.I. many tools for catching a spouse in the act. They can have GPS mapping devices placed on a spouse’s car to see if they are lying about where they are going when they leave the house. Private investigators will also go to bars and restaurants, which the spouse may visit after work, to see who they’re talking to and whether they are collecting any prospective girlfriend’s or boyfriend’s phone numbers. The suspected partner may also be photographed or monitored through binoculars while they are with a mistress or lover.

A private investigator will also find ways to obtain bank accounts statements, credit card records and other financial documents. The P.I. will need to show the client whether or not their spouse has opened up alternate bank accounts so they can entertain their lover. A bank statement will show odd hotel visits, gift purchases, elaborate dining at expensive restaurants and even fees which a cheating spouse might have paid to enter cheaters’ chat rooms. A P.I. will need to be creative and diligent in their research skills in case a cheating spouse is using fake names to enter internet sites, go to hotels with their lover, or to open additional credit cards. Some private investigators are even offering a few forensic skills by offering to test objects belonging to the unfaithful spouse for evidence of a lover’s hair and bodily fluids.
